Fashion and Special Effects Winner and Losers at the 75th BAFTAs Awards

16/03/2022

For anyone involved in the television and film industry, the talk of the last couple of weeks has been focused on the BAFTAs. The British Academy Film Awards, which took place in person this year following a difficult couple of years for the film industry due to the pandemic, are now in their 75th year.

All eyes and ears were fixed on 13th March for the prestigious event, and as usual, the categories and winners were not the only talking point. In the immediate aftermath of the ceremony, this year’s host, Australian film actor, Rebel Wilson, famous for her role in films including Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect, was featured in many news articles as critics and the public alike suggested that she was the worst presenter in the history of the ceremony. However, the fashion and of course, the winners, are what was interesting.

Perhaps the events of the last two years and a lack of in-person award ceremonies had much to answer for, but huge bows and frothy lace were the order of the day for many of the designers behind the red-carpet dresses. Some of the stars managed to pull the look off while others were not so lucky; director Charlotte Carrolls yellow and blush pink outfit looked a little bit too overdone. The shorter black dress, frothy train and oversized bow that Florence Pugh opted for was certainly a more modern take on red carpet attire. However, it too divided public opinion.

Word has it that prior to the ceremony, guests were asked to dress respectfully considering the situation in Ukraine, and there were certainly plenty of classic black outfits amongst the audience. As the stars showed, sometimes there really is no substitute for a classic black formal gown.

There was also a profusion of yellow and blue amongst the star's attire and there was more than a smattering of discrete yellow and blue ribbons in solidarity.

The Winning Films

Film Production

From its humble start in 1948 when there were just three different categories, the BAFTAs now boasts 25 different categories. Whilst many of these are geared towards the actors, supporting actors and the films, considerable recognition is given to those categories of people without whom films wouldnt be quite as powerful. These categories include costumes, special effects, editing and hair/makeup. Over the years, these have become increasingly important to the film industry, and it is only right that the BAFTAs recognise these important contributions.

Dune, who had widely been tipped as one of the biggest winners this year, did not disappoint picking up four of the big awards, including special visual effects.
