5 emerging technologies that are transforming the field of healthcare

Throughout history, medicine has always been at the forefront of human innovation, from the development of life-saving antibiotics to help us fight infection to vaccines that protect against diseases such as smallpox and, more recently, COVID-19. Advances in medical imaging such as MRI and CT scans allowed us to get a glimpse inside the human body without the need for invasive surgeries, while organ transplants offered a remarkable solution to people with life-threatening conditions. Based on all this pedigree, it makes total sense why you’d want to study medical science at Bolton.

Today, cutting-edge technology is once again redefining what we consider to be possible. Medical laboratories are no longer just places for routine testing, but dynamic hubs utilising exciting new tools and methods. Here are five emerging technologies that are now starting to push the medical field into a bold new future:

1. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning — AI is revolutionising diagnostics by processing masses of data in mere seconds; identifying patterns that even the most well-trained human eye could miss. Whether it’s scanning images for cancerous cells or analysing blood samples for abnormalities, AI systems are helping us diagnose and detect diseases with incredible speed, efficiency and accuracy.

2. Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) — Medical professionals can unlock the secrets of our DNA. NGS allows for the rapid, comprehensive sequencing of our DNA and RNA, providing a detailed look at our very genetic makeup. This technology is helping doctors create more personalised treatment choices and pinpoint possible genetic mutations that may be future indicators of disease.

3. Lab-on-a-chip (LOC) — This technology allows medical professionals to perform complex laboratory tests in the palm of their hands. These tiny, portable devices can be used to speed up things like lab tests with results coming in a matter of minutes rather than days. LOC’s potential for point-of-care testing could mean that scientists will soon no longer be confined to the lab. Instead, they’ll be on the front line delivering life-saving diagnostics directly to patients.

4. CRISPR-CAS9 — One of the most revolutionary tools in modern science, this groundbreaking gene editing technology allows scientists to precisely edit sections of our DNA. Though it sounds like the premise of a horror film, CRISPR technology has the potential to cure genetic disorders once thought to be totally untreatable. Not only that but it is being used in labs to develop innovative diagnostic tests that can detect diseases with unprecedented accuracy.

5. 3D bioprinting — Regenerative medicine is not a new concept, but with 3D bioprinting, labs will soon be able to create tissue and organ models that mimic human physiology. This is game-changing for pharmacology, disease research and potentially neuroscience. It’s thought that this technology could one day replace the need for animal testing and even create functional organs that will save countless lives.
