New Dental Implant Crowns Made of Cellulose-Based Nanocomposites

The latest in dental implant crowns…and why now is the time to upskill in dental technology!

Dental implant crowns can make a big difference to people with damaged or missing teeth. Not only do dental crowns make it easier for people to eat while supporting jaw structure, but they can improve their smile.

They are vital to dentistry with regard to both aesthetics and functionality and can seriously improve quality of life for patients. And today’s advancements in dental technology make it an exciting time for professionals to retrain and upskill. If you would like to develop your skills and knowledge in this area, the MSc Digital Dental Technology course at the University of Bolton could be for you.

The latest cellulose-based dental crowns

Things are moving quickly in the world of dental technology, and there’s never been a better time to pursue a career in this field. For professionals who want to increase job prospects and boost earning potential, this is also a great time to return to university to do a master’s.

One example of how fast things are progressing is the new multiphase nanocomposite material. This is being used to imitate the peachick mantis shrimp club for creating strong implant crowns in the laboratory.

Pioneered by a group of researchers from the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, these crowns use a new bioinspired material, which is a hybrid of birch-cellulose and genetically engineered proteins.

The result? Tougher, more impact-resistant and significantly lighter implants. These could lead the way in dental implant crowns of the future.

Dental implant crowns inspired by mantis shrimp

The mantis shrimp’s club-like forelimbs have been the inspiration behind these new dental crowns. Small but mighty, the shrimp are able to whip out their clubs and smash into their prey at 23 metres per second, and with the strength of a bullet from a rifle. Despite this impact, their clubs do not come away with any damage.

This advancement in dental implant crowns will change the market, and will help dental surgeries offer better, more permanent solutions for patients.
