Course Overview
The University of Bolton has a 'Teaching Intensive, Research Informed' ethos. We aspire to offer postgraduate student-focused courses that inform best practice in teaching and learning, underpinned by the research knowledge of our high-quality staff.This contemporary and stimulating stand-alone module supports you in building expert mentoring knowledge to advance the professional development of education staff and enhance the learning experiences of mentees at your institution. Our welcoming team of highly experienced, professionally and academically qualified staff will support you in reflecting on the differences between coaching and mentoring and guide you as you develop an in-depth understanding of planning and implementing mentoring schemes. Together, we'll explore the roles of motivation and communication in effective mentoring, including dialogue, listening skills and feedback, and discuss the ethical considerations that can impact mentoring.
With our support, you'll explore and evaluate theories and models related to mentoring processes before considering approaches to mentoring in a specific educational context. We'll guide you as you critically analyse the mentor and mentee relationship to improve the latter's learning experience.

Entry Requirements
- Normally, you'll have successfully completed an honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, and have appropriate work experience.
- An initial qualification in teaching, if this is not formally part of your first degree, is desirable. Experience in the education sector is strongly advised because you'll need to reflect critically on your experience and relate theory to practice.
- We're more than happy to have an informal chat with you about this course, either over the phone or in person. If you wish to meet in person, please contact the Programme Leader to arrange a mutually convenient time. (While we reserve the right to interview it's not our usual practice for this course.)
- If English isn’t your first language, you’ll also need IELTS 6.5 with normally no less than 6.0 in any band (or equivalent). We also accept a range of other English language qualifications – please visit our English Language Requirements web page for more details.

Fees & Funding
Home/EU Fees
Home students starting this course in the first year will be required to pay a Home fee of £1,416 for the academic year 2024/25.
International Fees
Overseas students starting this course in the first year will be required to pay a Overseas fee of £2,658 for the academic year 2024/25.
Bursaries
Important note regarding tuition fees for the 2024-25 academic year: EU nationals who meet residency requirements (have settled or pre-settled status) may be eligible for 'Home' fee status. If you do not meet these residency requirements, overseas fees will apply. Irish citizens living in the UK or Ireland will be eligible for 'Home' fee status under the Common Travel Area arrangement. Please read the student finance for EU students web page on www.gov.uk for information.
The fees for a student's course of study will be set for the normal duration of that course subject only to inflationary increases – measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded in March each year to take effect for subsequent start dates.

Teaching & Assessment
This module offers diverse learning and teaching approaches that are stimulating, personalised and inclusive, and informed by reflection, evaluation and scholarship. You can expect lectures, presentations, seminars, workshops, collaborative task presentations, and group and individual tutorials. We use a blended approach, including online learning and teaching, and offer learning opportunities in individual, group and collaborative settings. Using the University of Bolton's virtual learning environment (VLE) helps to enhance your learning, enables communication and collaboration, and supports real-time formative assessment.
You can expect a wide range of assessment methods and effective feedback strategies, including peer and tutor feedback. Assessment tasks are linked to the learning outcomes and are completed before the end of the module. Module assessments typically involve written coursework, oral presentations, time-constrained activities, and portfolios. Formative assessment, which does not contribute to your final mark, is given to help you improve your work. Feedback may be given verbally, in writing or online. Feedback for summative assessment, which does contribute to your final result, is usually given in writing. We can then offer a more detailed verbal explanation if you desire.
