Course Overview
This stand-alone advanced professional development course offered by the University of Bolton aims to build on your pre-existing knowledge of adult care home nursing practice.Our dedicated team will support you in developing an in-depth knowledge of long-term conditions associated with ageing, managing complex multiple morbidities, frailty and end-of-life care. You'll explore the concepts of advanced communication, autonomous working, holistic assessment and leadership and management so you can develop competencies and skills that are highly valued in the care sector. We'll guide you as you build your knowledge and application of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) fundamental standards for care. We'll encourage you to build skills in negotiating, coaching, teaching and supporting people and their carers, and help you learn how to collaborate effectively with other agencies and services to enable residents to remain safely in their usual place of care. We'll also support you in gaining a sound working knowledge of the legislation and policy that underpins care home nursing practice.

Entry Requirements
- To undertake this course, you must offer current professional registration as a health or social care practitioner.
- Normally, you'll need to provide evidence of post-registration experience in professional practice and a first degree in nursing. We may also consider your application if you have undertaken study at level HE6 recently.
- Current employment in an appropriate role in a community nursing setting will be an advantage.
- You may be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.

Teaching & Assessment
This advanced professional development course adopts a blended learning approach. It uses theoretical and practice-based learning to develop your skills and place this within the context of your residents' care.
Lectures introduce topics and involve a mixture of theory and case-based discussions around clinical scenarios. We'll expect you to undertake self-directed learning following the lectures to explore each topic in greater depth. You'll also need to develop a practice portfolio to consider current research evidence and use this to inform your clinical practice. A range of relevant web-based resources will be available via Moodle, the University's virtual learning environment, to support you in completing this work at a time and place that is convenient to you. These activities are designed to help you fully develop the underpinning knowledge required to complete the assessments.
Formative assessment supports your learning but does not contribute to your final mark. You'll receive feedback from your tutors and peers that allows you to reflect on your progress and identify what you are doing well and where you may need extra help. Summative assessment will involve a written essay and portfolio. These elements will contribute to your final mark. Before submitting these assessments, you'll have the opportunity to gain feedback on your draft work with tutorial time so you can ask questions.
