Dr Peter Catterall

Peter Catterall FRHistS is Professor of History and Policy at the University of Westminster and a specialist in nineteenth and twentieth-century British political, constitutional, social and cultural history. He also teaches public policy and politics for the Hansard Society and has written extensively on British constitutional and administrative issues. As well as editing the diaries of former British Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan, for publication, he has also published on such diverse issues as the British media, welfare policy, heritage policy and international relations.

His most recent book is Labour and the Free Churches 1918-1939: Religion, Radicalism and Righteousness (London: Bloomsbury, paperback edition 2018). He is the founding editor of National Identities and his current research focuses on the uses of ambiguity in political rhetoric, policy-making and international relations. Professor Catterall is the chair of Crossness Engines Trust and of the George Lansbury Memorial Trust. He is also a member of the Valuation Tribunal for England and the London Historic Environments Forum.
