The University of Bolton will next month host a Summer Basketball Camp for young basketball players looking to develop their skills.

The five-day programme is open to all genders aged between 14 and 18 and there are residential and non-residential options.

The camp will run from 29 July to 2 August at the Bolton One Sports Centre and players will have the amazing opportunity to be coached by basketball icon Joe Arlauckas.

The former professional player, who was named one of the 101 greatest players in European basketball and is now a Euroleague commentator and coach, will share his extensive knowledge and experience. He will guide aspiring young players through various aspects of the game and giving them the chance to learn from a true legend.

Anastasios Traianos, a former professional basketball player in the top leagues of Greece and the British Basketball League with the Manchester Giants, has organised the camp.

He said: "Being involved in basketball in Greater Manchester, I have been impressed with the rise in popularity of the sport over the last decade. More and more young people are loving the game and wanting to improve.

“We wanted to create something beyond the traditional basketball camps to give young players the opportunity to broaden their horizons and have an extraordinary experience.

“As a player, Joe was one of the best to play the game and as a coach, he is trusted by the NBA Academy and the EuroLeague to run their basketball development camps across the world.

“We are delighted to have him leading this programme at the University of Bolton this summer alongside a host of renowned and highly experienced coaches.”

The camp will feature comprehensive basketball training delivered by an elite coaching roster consisting of renowned coaches with a wealth of experience at top youth levels.

The programme also includes:

  • The opportunity to work with Joe on the court and in workshops focusing on positive media exposure, interview skills and social media profile management
  • Pro-style drills covering offensive and defensive technical skills and decision-making in dynamic game situations
  • Strength and conditioning sessions and basketball-specific workouts to prepare for the physical demands of the game
  • A comprehensive performance evaluation and laboratory testing to provide athletes with a deeper insight into their strengths, areas for improvement and performance capabilities. It will also enable a tailored training and development plan to be created for each player. These assessments alone are worth more than £300.

Participants will also have the opportunity to experience the full University of Bolton environment, including:

  • A trip to the Anderton Centre to develop teamwork, leadership and communication skills
  • Access to the University's superb facilities and state-of-the-art sports science support from highly trained professionals
  • Participation in activities that provide a taste of university life and the academic environment at the University of Bolton

Anastasios said: "Physicality is paramount in modern basketball. We wanted to offer our participants a unique opportunity to be screened at a professional level and receive a comprehensive report with valuable suggestions for their development conducted by expert sports scientists from the University of Bolton.”

Residential participants will be staying at the scenic outdoor activity centre and part of the University of Bolton Group, the Anderton Centre.

Just a 20-minute minibus ride from the training facilities, participants will also have the incredible opportunity to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature and enjoy the breath-taking landscape.

The residential option also includes:

  • Arrival on Sunday 28 July and departure on Saturday 3 August 2024
  • Transport to and from Manchester Airport/transport to and from Bolton/Manchester train stations
  • Daily transport from accommodation to training facilities and back
  • Three meals per day
  • 24-hour supervision and security
  • 24-hour welfare support
