Postgraduate Research Annual Tuition Fees New Students 2024/25

The fees for the Centre for Islamic Finance are £15,950 per year for all Home/EU/International Full Time students and £7975 per year for all Home/EU/International Part Time students

Writing up students (3)

£500 for all Home/EU and International students in their first writing up year, doubling in each subsequent year

Notes

(1) Tuition fees for students admitted under individual or collective collaborative arrangements with external organisations will normally vary from those presented here. Tuition fees may also be supplemented by additional charges or fees as agreed with the student or sponsor.

(2) 'Outside the UK' means that the student spends the majority of their time outside the UK and therefore includes most of those 'split site' and 'distance learning' arrangements where students are primarily or wholly based overseas.

(3) Route A students are not normally eligible for the writing up fee but will usually be charged the annual tuition fee pro rata for any period of registration which exceeds the normal period for this route. Writing-up status must be confirmed in writing by a student's supervisor before any writing-up fee will be sanctioned.

(4) This fee (like any other fee) may be subsidised by the student's Academic Group, resulting in a transfer between the relevant Academic Group budgets.

UK Government PhD Doctoral Loans

The UK government introduced doctoral loans in September 2018.

• Non-means tested loans of up to £29,390 are available to eligible students under the age of 60 as a contribution towards the costs of completing a doctoral qualification.

• Eligible students ordinarily resident in England will be able to take their loan to any UK university with degree awarding powers. Individuals ordinarily resident in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not eligible for loans.

• The repayment rate for the loans is currently 7.9%. For students also with a masters loan, repayment will be taken through one single postgraduate loan repayment of 7.9%.

• Repayment will be made concurrently with repayment of any undergraduate student loans.

• The repayment threshold is currently £21,000.

Research Councils UK

The Research Councils UK (RCUK) is a Government Body made up of seven UK research councils. They are responsible for, among other things, managing the distribution of investment funds into research each year, which totals around £3 billion. Some of these funds are available to individual research students; more information can be found on the Research Councils UK website.

University Of Bolton Research Funding Initiatives

Ainsworth Travel Scholarships Scheme (2018): This scheme aims to provide support for research-related academic travel for registered PhD students of the University of Bolton. The scheme will provide a small number of travel grants up to a maximum of £500 per applicant. Reasonable costs associated with travel such as accommodation and subsistence should be bid for as part of the award. Find out more here.
