Tom Kennie

Tom is a founding director of Ranmore Business Management Consultancy and has worked with over 150 universities globally on a range of leadership, management and governance projects and programmes.

Prior to establishing Ranmore over 20 years ago he spent 6 years as Director of Human Resources for an international firm of property advisors and prior to this was Group Head of Learning and Development for Balfour Beatty. He has also been a full-time academic spending 8 years as Head of Surveying in the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Surrey and 4 years at the University of Technology in Kingston, Jamaica. In his earlier career he worked as a chartered surveyor in the construction and offshore oil and gas sectors.

Tom was the co-founding programme director of the UK Leadership Foundation for HE ‘Top Management Programme’ (TMP), a leadership development programme for members of senior leadership teams in universities. He is also programme director of the International Association of Universities (IAU) on-line ‘Leading Globally Engaged Universities (LGEU) + programme. He is regularly involved in supporting teams to review and refresh their strategic priorities and plans. He has also conducted a number of reviews of governance for several UK universities.

Tom studied at the University of Glasgow) and subsequently qualified as a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS); he is a Chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CMIPD) and is also a member of the Institute of Management Consulting (Certified Management Consultant (CMC)).

He was appointed in 2016 as an Honorary Senior Fellow of the LH Martin Institute at the University of Melbourne. In 2019 he was also appointed as an Honorary Visiting Professor at the University of Bolton in the field of Higher Educational Leadership. Tom has also just concluded co-authoring, with Professor Robin Middlehurst, a book on the theme of ‘Leadership Transitions in Universities’ – Arriving, Surviving and Thriving at the Top’ recently published by Routledge.
