What is a Computing Degree?

When you think of a computing degree, does your mind immediately jump to long coding sessions and assembling hardware?

While those aspects are undeniably part of computing, there’s so much more to this degree than meets the eye!

It’s Not All About the Technical

Yes, computing is a technical subject. There’s no getting away from that. But, when you delve deeper, you’ll uncover much more.

Mind over machine

Computing isn’t all algorithms and data.

At the crux of it lie deep philosophical questions:

Can machines ever be conscious?

- What are the ethical implications of AI decision-making?

A good computing degree doesn't shy away from these questions, making budding computer scientists as much philosophers as they are technicians.

The Art of Coding

Have you ever looked at a line of code and thought it was… beautiful?

Many people don’t realise that programming is as much an art as a science.

From crafting the perfect user experience to designing striking graphics, creativity and computing often work in harmony to ensure the best results.

What Does a Computing Degree Teach You?

This type of degree will cover various aspects of computing. We’ll look at some key areas of study below:

- Database design and management - Learn how to design, implement, and manage databases using popular database management systems

- Computer networks - Understand the principles of computer networks, how data is transmitted, network protocols, and the design and management of networks

- Web development - Acquire the skills to design, create, and manage websites and web applications.

- Cyber security - Learn about threats, vulnerabilities, and techniques to protect computer systems and networks from cyberattacks.

- Hardware and software - Delve into the architecture of computer systems in terms of software and the underlying hardware.
